Indonesia

  • Indonesia's US$900 billion economy is the largest in Southeast Asia and one of the fastest growing in Asia. After steadily cooling over the past five years, Indonesia's economy is expected to pick up steam to 5.2% this year and 5.5% in 2017 on the back of government infrastructure spending and economic reforms. Despite continuing weak external conditions, the archipelago country is one of the most stable economies in Asia underpinned by strong domestic consumption, which makes up more than 60% of GDP.
Politically Indonesia remains stable albeit in the midst of a potentially historic inflection point. President Joko Widodo's anti-establishment style and largely reformist agenda continues to ruffle feathers among the country's political elite who thrive within the pervasive patron-client architecture. These relationships are further challenged by the no non-sense Governor of Jakarta, Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama, who has executed sorely needed reforms in the face of embedded interests. The Jakarta gubernatorial election will be held in February 2017 and the incumbent Ahok is widely popular which bodes well for continued reforms and level headed policy making in the nations capital.
